This is an article I wrote 16 months ago on medium. I had been on my particular health regime (the type I advocate here) for only a month at this point and it was the fat guy flogging a diet book tragic imagery which many would cringe at. But my convictions were well formed even back then while only losing a kg per week at this point (4kg lost). My next visit to the scales was a further 4kg lose and the next week was a further 4kg. I then averaged around 2kg per week for a while and then less. To the point now where I’m approximately 80kg lighter from the top. As long as I keep nourished with the essential micro nutrients I’ll be slim for ever. This is possible for all, really! Enjoy the read.

Diet and exercise to be healthy is a failed theory. You may say that I dieted and exercised and I’ve lost weight and and feel healthy. So have I, it’s easy, you feel good but over time it is a struggle to keep weight off or keep eating healthy unless your will power keeps you on track. The track is not that good. If you need to use will power to diet as a restriction and consciously seeking the healthy food which is required then I contend this is still a failed theory. How? If you are succeeding more than others it is highly likely you are just better at limiting yourself versus others which are overweight or unhealthy, you may still have cravings which will make you fail keeping off weight and being healthy.
These cravings you resist are the failed theory part, and how much longer will you be able to resist junk food and start to miss exercise sessions. 90 plus percent of people will fail, and the few that supposedly succeed are constantly battling cravings, restriction, and dragging themselves to exercise. They are motivated. This does not mean success. There was no need for motivating yourself to eat right and lose weight 120 years ago. Most were slim naturally without needing motivation to stay slim. Counters to that will state there was less food back then and we worked hard labour back then also. True. But there are many hard workers today which are overweight and many poor are overweight also. Up to half of the population in the western world is obese.
Just one more slap in the face argument I have to illustrate is: The US is the most obese nation in the world and has an average life expectancy ranking around 40th in the world, even though they spend more on healthcare than all the countries in the world combined. Also according to the CDC all current generations will be living a shorter life than the previous generation. So something else is going on as well. The angle I am trying to get at is that there is one thing which is different today than any time in history more than a century ago. That is we are starving ourselves of nutrients, while the motivated people eat well and exercise they are also malnourished, not getting all the nutrients they need because they are still experiencing cravings. For most others there are obese people and we are having more chronic disease. But we have all the calories we need many would posture at. Calories doesn’t translate to full nutrition. We are missing out on micro nutrients (vitamins and minerals) we need to live healthy lives. The mainstream tends to fixate on macro nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fat) a failed approach in itself. When we seek the restriction or abstaining from bad foods thing these are symptoms of a nutrient deficit while those with less will power satisfy the cravings and get more cravings because they are still nutrient deficient.
When we have cravings some will give in, succumbing to the cravings and others have the motivation to resist for health or vanity type reasons. Most of us are nutrient deficient when we encounter this craving struggle. Most of us have a condition called pica. Unknowingly craving or seeking nutrients, especially minerals which manifests toward junk food seeking or abstaining from it. Animals also suffer from pica and go to great lengths to satisfy their mineral deficit, like horses eating their stables. We humans seek salty, fried, and sugary food in today’s manifestation of pica. A century plus ago some would seek ash and soil to satisfy cravings (for minerals). This is the factor I would suggest is the failed theory part that diet and exercise improves health, it doesn’t. We are still in a constant battle to resist mineral seeking, resisting to eat too much or seek unhealthy food. We are constantly in nutrient deficit which cause chronic disease, not the popular beliefs like lifestyle choice, vaccines, or pollution doing the rounds these days.
But our life expectancies have risen to nearly double that a century ago? I know this. But there are other factors at play. Cheap calories, sanitation, and cleaner water were major contributions to this, so farmers and engineers were greater contributors to life expectancy than doctors, which perhaps are next in line as a life extending contributor I would contend. In emergency medicine I acknowledge that allopathic mainstream medicine has performed well, but not chronic disease. Chronic disease is a sign of nutrient malnutrition. Mainstream medicine fails to acknowledge this. I also contend that measuring life expectancy tends to not count some earlier causes of death, the real life expectancy in the world is more like 60 versus 79 which a google search will produce. So what happened to make us suffer pica and malnutrition and therefore chronic disease?
3 pm Monday September 4 1882 Pearl Street New York City was the moment sending us to chronic sickness amongst living longer in many cases. We unknowingly cut off the former ability of gaining minerals through ash waste we used to scatter on our gardens. This accelerated when dam construction for electricity generation and irrigation gained speed. What do these practices have in common? The unknown ability to gain minerals from ash (90% plus of ash is minerals) and silt carrying minerals from mineral rich mountains has been lost. This may appear an out there idea to many but indeed the elephant in the room. Our crops are only ever able to have minerals in their harvest depending on what is in the soil. Vitamins on the other hand are generated by the particular crop growth.
So how do we gain the minerals we need then? Supplementing is the modern day option, unless you start eating dog food which has all the nutrients we require. Why not humans? That’s another discussion. But there are limitations to supplementing. If you eat gluten you have now reduced your ability to absorb the nutrients you are consuming, this was the issue since ancient Egypt when wheat was decided upon as the main grain due its economic utility for cheaper calories and storage capacity. Before this millet was the go to grain which was more nutritious with micro and macro nutrients but lacked storage advantages. This is the time we started reducing our life expectancy, as our ability to uptake nutrients was reduced, but we still had nutrients albeit absorbing less, particularly minerals coming in because of ash practice and seasonal flooding bringing mineral rich nutrients from the mountains. The Nile delta is now a shadow of its former self in vitality due to all the dams along the Nile (at least 25 dams for hydroelectricity and others for irrigation purposes).
So what do you need to do to be slim, healthy and live longer? There are 12 particular foods to avoid, gluten, oils, burnt animal fat, and processed meats. Then you need to supplement 90 plus nutrients. So there is an African and an Indian elephant in this nutrition room we need to tackle. The first priority is to clean up the diet, then reduce your nutrient malnutrition through supplementing. No allopathic doctors of note have identified the whole picture of health, and few naturopaths have cracked the code we just have. Many have parts of the code but are missing the understanding of which nutrients are required to sustain total health. Also another barrier to addressing health in a timely manner is your current age. The longer you have consumed gluten and the bad foods the longer we need to wait for full benefits of this approach. If a child of 10 years is to have their diet cleaned up it will take a couple of weeks to get full benefit with supplementing. A 40 year old perhaps 8 months, and an 80 year old around 18 months for the intestines and arteries to heal from the years spent eating the bad foods.
